The early beginning of the Perry Lecompton Community Library actually started in Ozawkie, Kansas. The original collection was housed in the Lakewood office building in 2005 and part of 2006 until their Board of Directors requested that the library be moved. Beverly and Jim Warren packed up the library and stored the books at their home for a period of time. On January 1, 2008, the collection of 592 books, all donated, were housed in the Perry Lecompton Community Library, which was then located inside the (former) Perry Thriftway grocery store in the former video rental part of that store. This undertaking was the brainchild of Beverly Warren who had a vision of establishing a community library. Beverly, along with Karla Meyers, Jan Steward, Sarah Peterson-Davis, Janet Barnett, and others worked diligently to make the library a reality. On October 3, 2008, the Perry-Lecompton Community Library was approved for tax-exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3). When the grocery store closed in December 2018, the library was relocated to a large unused room at the Highland Community College location in Perry. We now have a collection of over 12,000 books and DVDs, puzzles, and audiobooks. In November 2025, the Perry-Lecompton Community Library became official after a voter referendum.
